Traditionally, memorials in Rajasthan were mostly chhatris (canopy) - elevated, dome-shaped pavilions which paid homage to the dead. The larger ones had multiple rooms and the interiors walls were at times decorated like those in Havelis. Located by the river or the road, these have over time become journey markers and reborn as community spaces for people to meet or spend time in.

Handicraft Item exports — the largest industry in Jodhpur employing over 2 lakh heads — registered a revenue of Rs 1100 crore in 2009-10 after emerging strongly from the 2008-global recession. However, the slowdown in European and US markets has hit export orders. The industry, which is facing an imminent danger of talent crunch and high input cost, seems to be in a Catch-22 situation.

Ethnic potlis and jholas, embroidered and decorated with buttons, beads, sequins, and appliqué, can be found in abundance here, as can indigenous leather products like stylish thread-worked chappals (slippers). Ask for old pieces but don’t fall for the antique” line—it is never so easy to find an authentic antique. Bargain hard.
